Canadian physicians can now use Gold Shunt for the surgical treatment of Glaucoma without the need for special access approval

Glaucoma is a group of age-related eye diseases characterized by elevated intraocular pressure, which cause optic nerve damage and subsequent loss of vision.  Initially, peripheral vision is lost.  If not treated, vision loss may continue, leading to total blindness over time.

Worldwide, it is estimated that approximately 67 million people have some level of visual impairment from glaucoma, with 6.7 million suffering from blindness.

The SOLX® Glaucoma Treatment System is the next generation treatment platform that has the potential to change the current approach to glaucoma therapy.  It provides a less invasive, yet highly effective glaucoma treatment for reducing Intraocular Pressure (IOP) associated with glaucoma in patients without creating a bleb.

The SOLX® Glaucoma Treatment System is comprised of the SOLX® Gold Shunt and the SOLX® 790 Laser.  The SOLX® Gold Shunt is a 24-karat gold, micro implant that reduces IOP by using the natural pressure differential between the front and back of the eye.  The SOLX® 790 Laser is a 790nm titanium sapphire laser for trabeculoplasty.
