What drives someone to build a new glaucoma device business? I have been invited as a guest speaker at several universities that teach entrepreneurship. This is the question that I am most often asked. To answer the question I have to share the following story and how it impacted my world.
Early in my career I worked for a diagnostic instrument company that developed devices that measure patient’s visual field in an attempt to diagnose and monitor glaucoma. While at an ophthalmologist’s office helping to install a new field analyzer I had my first direct interaction with a Glaucoma patient and their physician.
The patient being screened was an elderly woman that had not come in for an eye exam in ten years. She was having trouble with her vision and her neighbor had to drive her in to see the doctor. This patient was diagnosed as having advanced glaucoma. The disease had progressed to the point that her doctor told her that her eyes were beyond his ability to save her vision. It was my first introduction to the devastating realities of glaucoma and what permanent vision loss means.
Over time I became good friends with this ophthalmologist, and I learned a lot about the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma. What stuck in my mind was the following quote: “Glaucoma is a surgical disease treated with pharmaceuticals.” This simple phrase provided me the focus to look for new answers, new tools, for physicians to use in the treatment of glaucoma. I knew if there was a new answer to this visual need, there was a business to be built.
This focus over the past 6 years has brought about the development of the SOLX platform of products. I am proud and amazed on what we (the SOLX team) has been able to accomplish so far. We have brought some ground breaking devices to market and have exceptional new products in the pipeline The Company who can continue to meet the unique needs of glaucoma physicians and their patients will become a cornerstone of the ophthalmology community, we believe SOLX can be that company.
Thank you for your interest in SOLX. We look forward to continuing to provide new and innovative tools for Glaucoma physicians and their patients
Best,
Doug Adams
